There were tricky winds for the Hampton Sailing Club Enterprise Open & South East River Series final, but it was visiting sailors who took the important trophy.
Fifteen boats lined up at the start of the first race and the fleet were out for one hours 40 minutes with Dave Beaney and his son John taking the race win. The host club’s Stuart Jenkins, ably crewed by younger daughter Fran, was second, with Hampton’s Matt and Ben Harley third The light winds for the first race dropped slightly over lunch but there was enough of a breeze for the second start of the day to give a decent race or at least keep most of the boats moving along the river.
The duty officer, perhaps smarting from scathing comments about his cruelty in keeping the fleet out for so long in the morning, shortened the course to give victory to visitors Dave & John Beaney. Steve & Kathy Collins of Minima were way back in second with Stuart Jenkins, now crewed by Imogen, third.
By the time the third race was flagged off at 3.30pm the winds had dropped to infuriating and challenging infrequent puffs - but the home sailors were unable to take advantage.
The race was won by Dave Beaney. Second was Philip Chambers, crewed by Olly Jenkins from Hampton, and third were Steve and Cathy Collins.
l result: 1 David & John Beaney 20234, 2 Steve & Cathy Collins 22628, 3 Fran & Imogen Jenkins 23160.
SE River series winners: David & John Beaney.
Husband & wife winners: Steve & Cathy Collins.
Ladies’ Trophy: Jane Chambers, Lucy Cooper & Imogen Jenkins.
