Ashley Bryant smashed Olympian Dean Macey’s 14-year-old decathlon record at the English Schools’ Championships in Bedford.
But despite setting a new points total of 7,219 – to beat Macey’s 7,134 in winning the 1995 senior boys’ title – the Hampton youngster was still not entirely satisfied with his performance.
Bryant, 18, who started a sports course at Brunel University this week, also broke the event’s javelin record with a throw of 61.13, although he threw more than 67m back in April.
A silver medallist with 6,821 points last year, Bryant had been hoping to better the 7,267 he recorded in taking bronze at the England Junior Championships in Stoke-on-Trent in June.
Bryant’s winning margin was cut to 265 points by a low finish in the final event, the 1,500m.
Bryant completes a proud English Schools Championship record, having won junior gold in 2005 and the intermediate title in 2006 and 2007.
He now takes a three-week break before starting winter training, but hopes to compete for Britain at next year’s IAAF World Junior Championships in Canada.
