The Epsom College golf team pipped Wellingon College to win the Schools Invitational Golf Tournament on Tuesday.
Some 24 independent schools, including Brighton, Charterhouse, Cranleigh, Eastbourne, Eton, Harrow, Lancing, Tonbridge and Winchester, took part in the scratch competition, hosted by the West Sussex Golf Club in Pulborough, which involved teams of four playing in two pair foursomes matches.
Epsom and Wellington tied for first place on 65 points - a meeting record - but Epsom took the magnificent Schools Invitational Bowl on countback, having outscored Wellington on the last nine holes played.
Captain Jeremy Morgan and his partner, Lewis Kuhler, provided the platform for the countback victory by blazing through the back nine in three under par, with two birdies and an eagle at the long 10th, while David Boote holed an important 10ft putt on the last green to secure 32 points with his partner, Danny Cullen.
This latest victory builds on the college team’s success in the national finals of the HMC Foursomes competition at the Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club during the summer, when they finished runners-up to Millfield.
Morgan was thrilled with the performance of his team.
“We played really well to beat such quality opposition and it showed that our experience at the nationals has had a positive effect and hardened the team up to high level competition,” he said.
