Surrey Cricket managing director Gus Mackay reckons young stars Tom Lancefield, Mahunthan Harinath and Seren Waters will play an important part in the club recapturing its former glories.
Banstead’s Lancefield, Sutton’s Harinath and Weybridge opener Waters have landed one-year emerging player contracts with the Brown Caps for their part in the second XI’s county championship title triumph last month.
Kenyan one-day international star Waters, 19, hit a half-century as the second string lifted the crown at Old Trafford for the first time since 1992 - the dawn of the previous golden generation that would go on to claim three county championship titles in four seasons.
Lancefield, 18, hit 20 as he made his Brown Caps first team debut in Sunday’s Pro 40 triumph at Leicestershire to cap an impressive season at club and second XI level.
While 18-year-old leg-spinner Mahunthan - whose brother Arun hit a maiden Liverpool Victoria County Championship Division Two half-century for Surrey against Glamorgan last week - also joins the staff on a full-time basis having helped Sutton to the Premier League title this summer.
“At the start of this year, there was a distinct policy decision made to play the Club’s young players in the second XI wherever possible and it has paid off with a magnificent championship victory last week, where seven of the twelve players were Surrey U19s,” said Mackay.
“The future development of these players is of vital importance to the fulfilment of our ambition to become the best domestic team of the next decade.”
Banstead’s Matt Spriegel added to his growing reputation with a maiden first-class century in the draw with Glamorgan and an unbeaten 81 in the Pro 40 win over Leicestershire.
