Purley's Darren Chan added another professional belt to his collection on Saturday as he won the IKF Southern Area Professional Light-Middleweight Kickboxing title.

The Fight Factory owner was only asked if he wanted to contest the fight in Bristol on Friday but still knocked reigning champion Steve Marshfield out with a spinning back kick in just the second round.

The 32-year-old, more renowned for competing in karate tournaments, has now won all three of his IKF kickboxing fights and was especially happy with the manner of his victory this time around.

"They asked me on Friday morning if I wanted to fight for the Southern Area title and as I felt quite fit I thought why not," he said.

"He has three titles and was the reigning champion, plus it was his local crowd in Bristol so he had a lot of support and there were a lot of boos when I came out.

"He came out really strong but I got my game together and got him in the second round in the side of the head and down he went.

"He actually asked me after what it was I had got him with."

Chan, who opened the Fight Factory five years ago in the basement of a hairdressers his parents bought in Brighton Road, now turns his attentions to the British Open Knockdown Championship in 10 days time.

The tournament at Crawley Leisure Centre is a full contact version of karate, with neither competitor allowed to wear gloves of protective pads.

"You are allowed to kick to the body, do low kicks and also kick to the head and the face," he said.

"It's basically the first person to knock the other one down and I suppose is sort of like UItimate Fighting but without the holding and grappling on the floor.

"It is hard work as you can have up to five fights in one day and there are people from Russia and Japan coming over.

"A lot of people see karate as a points scoring sport but this is a bit different."
