The fifth birthday Bushy Park 5km park run was so popular that the computers couldn’t cope.

More than 900 runners took part, but many had to wait until Wednesday to hear their official finishing positions.

The sheer number of runners who turned out proved overwhelming for the usually well-oiled system.

Three-time European junior cross country champion Steph Twell took part, while Australian star Benita Johnson was also there.

The winner of the milestone race was Mike Skinner, who was taking part for the second time.

Skinner, the Kingston and Richmond schools sports partnerships competition manager, was more than a minute clear of the field in 15 minutes, two seconds.

Newham & Essex Beagles’ Olly Laws was second (16:03), with Clapham Chasers’ James Ellis third (16:32), sharing that time with Hercules Wimbledon teenager Alex Robinson. Chasers’ Neil Aitken was fifth (16:38).

Thames Hare & Hounds’ Julia Bleasdale, finishing sixth overall, was women’s winner (16:50) and posted the top age-graded performance.

It was her seventh win in nine appearances at Bushy Park and her winning time was just nine seconds off her best for the course.

Twell was second (17:28), with Vicky Gill, of Thames Turbo Triathlon, third (18:02).

Ranelagh Harriers’ over-70 veteran John Hanscomb, who has completed more than 200 Bushy Park events, finished 763rd.

A presentation was made before the start to the founder of the event five years ago, Paul Sinton-Hewitt, who displayed a mosaic of the 13 runners from the first race in October, 2005.

l Stourbridge RC’s James Savage (16:46) made it three victories in five appearances at the Wimbledon Common 5km park run on Saturday.

Damian Shirley, of Highgate Harriers (17:53), while Vicky Cotter, of Wimbledon Windmilers (19:18), was the women’s winner.

l Chris Phelan, of South London Harriers (17:26), led home a 122-strong field in Banstead Woods ahead of Graham Hewett, of Dorking & Mole Valley (17:32), and Kristain Lennard, of South London Harriers (18:15).

Teenager Monica Isaac (20:03), of Sutton & District, was first woman.

l Striders of Croydon’s Matthew Morgan won the Roundshaw Downs 5km park run in 18:01.

He finished 17 seconds ahead of Jack-Louis Bourne, of South London Harriers.

Unattached runner Robert Sharpe placed third in a time of 19:02.

Debutant Josephine Thompson, of Striders of Croydon AC, was the first woman (21:29).

The Richmond Park park run celebrates its second birthday tomorrow.

l The widow of Ranelagh Harriers’ Stephen Instone, who drowned while on holiday in Switzerland, is expected to be presented with the points trophy, which her late husband won.

Unattached runner Dan Afshar headed last Saturday’s 150-plus field home in 18:08.

Serpentine’s Margaret Purr completed a hat-trick of victories in the women’s race (20:29), slicing 19 seconds off her previous best.
