Reed’s School in Cobham were victorious in both the boy’s Year 8 and Year 10 AEGON Team Tennis Schools competition held in Bolton, Lancashire, at the weekend.

The competition, which aims to provide players of all abilities with the opportunity to compete in a school team tennis competition, is one of the biggest school competitions for children in years 7-10 organised by The Tennis Foundation and supported by the Lawn Tennis Association.

Having begun the competition back in March along with 2,000 other schools, the two Reed’s teams successfully progressed through local stages, the regional knock-out rounds and the quarter-finals to book their place in the national finals.

The Year 10 team was made up of Harry Burley, Jonathan Cornish, Jathan Malik, Christian Throm-Jones and Jorge Wilton, whilst Year 8 was represented by Billy Dawson, Josef Dodridge, Freddie Mcgeehan and Joshua Southern.

Having won both titles last year, the pressure was on for Reed’s as the Year 8s were drawn against Kenilworth Sports College, Holmfirth High School and Backwell School.

Meanwhile their counterparts from Year 10’s took on Bishop Stopford School, Millfield and The Grammar School at Leeds at the Bolton Tennis Centre across two days of competition.

In the Year 8 event, Reed’s demolished all their opposition without dropping a single set in any of their three matches which included four singles and two doubles per match.

After a highly convincing display, Team Captain Ben Edwards said: “The weekend was brilliant as we have been privileged enough to win this great competition for the fourth year in a row at this age group.

"At Reed’s it is team effort and the boys fully deserve the credit as they continue to push the boundaries in a desire to succeed.”

Meanwhile, The Grammar School at Leeds posed little opposition for Reed’s Year 10s as they were swept aside ten sets to two. On the same day, Reed’s continued their winning streak against Bishop Stopford from Northamptonshire with the same score line as their earlier match.

Reed’s went on to wrap up the tournament with a much closer 7-6 win over rivals Millfield in a thoroughly deserved match to lift the trophy for the second year running:

“We are absolutely delighted to have won this title for a second year in a row and to have won all three National Schools titles this year,” said Reed’s Year 10 school captain Adrian Blackman.

“A lot of credit must go to all the players and staff of the Reed’s School Tennis Academy. Our opponents were brilliant and we won through sheer guts and determination. We really enjoy playing in this well organised competition.”

LTA Tournament Director George Donnelly said: “The weekend was an excellent demonstration of the tremendous talent within our schools. It was great to see how much the tournament means to the schools and I congratulate both Reed’s teams on their well deserved victory. They played some fantastic tennis and we look forward to welcoming them back next year.”
