Streatham travelled North to take on a Peterborough Islanders side, who needed to win to stave off relegation. The Redskins were dealt a big blow midweek when they learned that goalie Will Sanderson’s knee injury would see him sidelined for a number of weeks.
With back up goalie Stefan Nubert unavailable for the game, Redskins Barry Spours handed a full debut to seventeen year old Samantha Bolwell. The Redskins also handed a debut to new signing Lucas Zilak on defence and welcomed back Slovakian star Peter Molnar to the line up after illness.
Peterborough took the lead with fourteen minutes gone, through Fraser Hendry, however only a minute later Gennadi Yufit set up Molnar for a quick fire equaliser.
The Redskins carved out a number of opportunities but also did their best to protect their young goalie. Casimir Madren-Britton then set up Molnar to give the Redskins the lead after 27 minutes.
Nerves began to creep in to the Redskins play, however defenceman Josh Allam and hardworking forwards Yufit and Russell Stevens stood out with some great hustling.
It wasn’t until ten minutes from the end that Perry Richardson made the game safe for the South Londoner’s with a solo effort to make the score 3-1. At the final buzzer the realisation of relegation hit the Islanders, however the Redskins were simply pleased to have arrested a slump in form that had seen them suffer three consecutive losses.
Bolwell received a deserved man of the match award for her performance turning away 25 shots in total with only the one against.
Streatham Head Coach Barry Spours was delighted with the win, and of course his goalie: “I would be lying if I wasn’t slightly concerned at our goal tending situation before the game, but in the end Sam had a great game and the team really rallied around her, “It was fantastic to have Peter (Molnar) back in the line up, as he gives the rest of the guys such confidence with his composure and nous. We have had a tough run of fixtures and this win was vital to give us a buffer from Haringey and Milton Keynes in the league”
The Redskins next home game is on Sunday 14th February against the Cardiff Devils. Face off is at 6.45pm and tickets are available on the door.
