Thames Hare & Hounds won the Surrey Ladies League as well as the Sweatshop Surrey Men’s cross country title – the first time they have achieved the double.
After her strong run in the South of England championship the previous weekend, Julia Bleasdale had little difficulty dealing with the opposition in the final Surrey Ladies League senior race on Wimbledon Common.
Ranelagh’s Liz Kipling, who seems to have found a new lease of life at the age of 36, spearheaded the 300-strong field up the first hill.
Bleasdale was among a leading group of eight runners during the opening stages of the race, but made a break after the first mile at Putney Vale.
At the end of the first lap she was around half-a-minute clear of Reigate’s Fiona Clark with Herne Hill’s Karen Ellison and Epsom & Ewell’s Emily Alden a further 20 seconds down.
Bleasdale more than a minute clear by the finish, which she reached in 27 minutes, 16 seconds, ahead of Clark (28:36) and Ellison (29:18).
Alden was fourth and first of the Division Two runners (29:24).
Kipling ran strongly to finish fourth in the Division One race in 29:47 ahead of Herne Hill’s Suzie Richards (29:49).
Belgrave’s Sarah Murphy was seventh (29:52), with Ruth Clifton of organising club Wimbledon Windmilers ninth (30:10).
Antonia Burt in 11th (30:51) and Liz Stavreski in 13th (31:01) were Thames’ other leading finishers.
Walton’s Natalie Warren (31:07) and Kingston & Polytechnic’s Maddy Hardwick (31:40) were second and third in the Division Two race.
Hercules Wimbledon pipped Kingston & Polytechnic by seven points for third place to gain promotion to the top division for the first time.
