George Sheedy of Claygate-based Foley ABC is through to the last eight of the NYCP championships after outboxing St Mary’s ABC rival Terry Budge.

Sheedy was all action from the start and scored freely in the first round with precision combination punches.

It was more of the same in the second, and St Mary’s threw in the towel halfway through the round after Budge’s knees gave way.

Another Foley in good form was Steve Ellis, who topped the bill at a lavish charity dinner show in Whitehall.

Ellis claimed a unanimous points decision against an experienced Army boxer over three three-minute rounds.

The first round was evenly matched, with both boxers showing a lot of respect and weighing up technical and tactical advantages.

In the second round, things came alive in an excellent exhibition of skill.

The Foley man got stronger as the round went on, landing shots to the head and body.

His fitness started to show in the third as he forced his opponent on to the back foot with an exemplary show of long and short-range punching.

Ellis’s display saw him voted best boxer of the evening.

Outside the ropes, the search for a new home for Foley has been concluded, with the club moving to Thames Ditton in April to join forces with the Weston Green Sports Club.
