Streatham Redskins shared the spoils with a Cardiff Devils side who had comprehensively beaten them in three previous meetings this season.

Goalie Will Sanderson failed to recover from a knee injury so Stefan Nubert started between the pipers for Sunday’s English National League clash.

The first period started a frenetic pace and Redskins took a 12th-minute lead when Peter Molnar slotted home a rebound from Cas Britton’s shot.

Cardiff hit back almost immediately on the powerplay with captain David James tipping Corey Watkins’ slap shot past Nubert.

The Redskins then had a number of chances in front of goal with both Liam Rasmussen and Kent Johnson both being denied at close range by Cardiff goalie Mike Brabon.

It took a powerplay for the Redskins to take the lead with two minutes remaining in the period. Dave Carr kept the puck in the zone and laid it to Perry Ricahrdson who put Shane Walsh through to score.

Redskins made it 3-1 53 seconds into the second period when Molnar set up Lockwood to fire into the roof of Brabon’s net.

Four minutes later, Russell Stevens burst through the Cardiff defence before placing his shot into the top corner.

But, with a three-goal advantage, Redskins started to look nervous and Tim Burrows reduced the deficit after good work from Chris Jones.

Then Cardiff scored again through Luke Piggott and, suddenly, it was 4-3.

The home side were clearly rattled, but a neat one two between Molnar and Lockwood split the Cardiff defence and the latter finished well to restore the two goal cushion.

Streatham also made a flying start to the third period. Redskins’ man-of-the-match Stevens skated down the left and fired a slapshot past Brabon into the far corner.

That was 6-3, but Cardiff were soon back in when Alan Armour scored from close range and Gareth Dixon’s looping shot also found the top of the net.

Redskins’ nerves again got the better of them and Piggott equalised with another shot that nestled in the bottom corner.

There was a bad-tempered finish as Armour clashed with Lukas Zilak while Phil Manny jumped on Streatham’s Gennadi Yufit.

Referee Francois Belanger awarded Redskins the powerplay, but they could not capitalise as fatigue set in.

Redskins’ next home game is against Oxford City Stars on Sunday, February 21 (6.45pm).
