Sheringdale and Brandlehow primary schools in Wandsworth have qualified for the semi-finals of the British Land Kids Cricket League, which take place at the Brit Oval tomorrow (Friday) from 1-4pm.
They take on Camelot and St Paul’s from Southwark and Loughborough and Reay from Lambeth for a place in the grand final at Lord’s on March 23.
Almost 200 state primary schools in London have taken part in a mixed eight-a-side indoor cricket competition for the prize of taking part in the grand final at the MCC indoor school at Lord’s.
Capital Kids Cricket is a registered charity, that was created in 1990 when the disappearance of cricket from the sports curriculum of inner London state primary schools became clear.
At that time, only 20 primary schools - out of more than 800 in the 16 inner London boroughs – and even fewer secondary schools were still teaching even the most basic form of cricket.
Through Capital Kids Cricket, 50,000 children from more than 600 primary and secondary schools in the region now play cricket on a regular basis. (capitalkidscricket.co.uk) British Land has sponsored Capital Kids Cricket for the past four years and seen the league go from strength to strength.
The League promotes harmony and team spirit and provides great fun and enjoyment to thousands of children who would otherwise never have such an opportunity.
The grand finals will also include the presentation of Tomorrow’s Superstar trophies to the four youngsters picked out by Capital Kids Cricket’s team of coaches as being the most likely to achieve top honours in 10 years and become natural successors to Ravi Bopara, CKC’s first ‘old boy’ to make it into England’s test team.
