Streatham Redskins were always going to fine last weekend’s double header tough against sides who had beaten them heavily in previous fixtures this season.
So it proved, with a 7-6 defeat at Bracknell Hornets on Saturday followed by a 5-1 home reverse by Oxford City Stars the following night.
Already missing Slovakian Peter Molnar for their trip to Berkshire, Streatham’s cause was further damaged within 53 seconds as his replacement, Czech defenceman Roman Culik, was kicked out of the game for high sticks.
With some questionable refereeing decisions going against Redskins, Bracknell raced into a 4-1 lead with only Perry Richardson’s short-handed effort giving the visitors any joy in the first period.
Goalie Stefan Nubert also found himself on the wrong side of the referee when he punched Bracknell’s James Galazzi and got a roughing penalty.
Streatham were much improved in the second period and got their reward when Liam Rasmussen’s shot rebounded kindly for Remy Boprey to fire home his first Redskins goal.
Alex Barker then made it 5-2, but Redskins hit back with two quick goals. Chris Wittenberg poked home from close range before Richardson’s long-range screamer found the net.
It was 5-5 at the start of the third period when Kent Johnson tore through the middle of the Bracknell defence before finishing high into the top corner.
The hosts were back in front shortly afterwards when Tony Barclay finished from Mark Galazzi’s pass.
But Redskins levelled matters again at 6-6 when former Hornet Richard Hardy went through one-on-one and poked the puck through the netminder’s legs.
But, after Joe Weire was harshly given a tripping penalty by referee Ian Hayden, Bracknell grabbed a late winner as Ben Duggan cut inside and finished high past Nubert.
Although Molnar returned to their line-up on Sunday, Streatham hit penalty trouble again on Sunday goals from Darren Elliott (two), Andy Shurmur and Paul Gore saw the visitors race into a 4-1 lead. Louis Lockwood was on target for Redskins.
Despite a fantastic atmosphere in the old High Road rink, there was only one further goal as Andy Cox wrapped up the scoring for Oxford.
Redskins visit Chelmsford this weekend, looking to get back to winning ways ahead of their next home game with MK Thunder on March 7 (6.45pm).
