Carshalton’s Tony Owen reckons he has plenty more still to offer after extending the unbeaten start to his career to six fights on Saturday.

Lightweight Owen stopped Gavin Deacon in the fifth round of their clash in Crawley, forcing the referee to step in after opening a nasty gash above Deacon’s eye.

And after the first inside-the-distance-win of his fledgling career, Owen insists he is just getting warmed up.

He said: “I’m going to be training even harder going forward and I feel I am going to get even stronger.

“I was picking my shots really well at the weekend and I was putting a lot into them.

“I felt strong and in control for the whole fight.

“I had put in a lot of work in the gym and it really paid off.”

Owen is expected to be back in the ring in April, in another low-key six-round offering.

And the 23-year-old is happy to take his time - as long as he is winning.

Owen added: “I’m fine having another few fights at this level as I am in no rush.

“I am going to concentrate on my training and be ready for whoever is put before me.

“I just plan to keep on winning and leave all the rest to my promoters.”

Things were not so good for close friend Danny Connor, who was forced to settle for a lacklustre draw in his debut contest against Daryl Setterfield.

But Connor refused to get downhearted.

He said: “It was my own fault.

“I thought I had the fight in the bag and I relaxed a bit.

“Everyone I have spoken to thought I won the fight but that is boxing I suppose.

“It was a case of ‘welcome to the pros’ and I will just have to knuckle down and move on.”
