Surrey enjoyed unprecedented success in the UK Inter-Counties Championships at Birmingham on Saturday, winning five of the 10 team titles as well as providing two individual winners.

The five-hour programme started well for Surrey with the county taking the honours in the opening two championships, the junior men and boys U13 events.

The winning boys were Jonny Hay in fourth (25 minutes, 29 seconds), Luke Caldwell 13th (26:19), Mickey Reed 20th (26:41) and Hercules Wimbledon’s Alex Robinson 45th (27:21).

Howard of Effingham schoolgirl Emelia Gorecka won the junior women’s title and will represent Britain at the World Championships in Poland on March 28.

The 16-year-old, who finished the 6,000m race in 20:40, said: “"I felt really good and really enjoyed it,”.

She was backed up by Lily Partridge in eighth (21:16), Georgia Peel 11th (22:08) and Catherine Taylor 20th (22:45) .

Herne Hill’s Julia Wedmore was 37th (23:24), with Epsom & Ewell’s Rosie Clarke 53rd (24:21).

Surrey also won the men’s U17 6km event.

Ian Bailey was second (18:43), with Josh Grace sixth (18:57), Hercules Wimbledon’s Liam White 10th (19:18) and Henry Pearce 31st (19:50).

The girls’ U15 triumph was led by Susan Shiel-Rankin in third (15:14), with Ruth Bourne 11th (15:47), Sophie Foreman 21st (16:09) and Harriet Preedy 22nd (16:11).

Surrey took silver in the women’s U17 5km event.

Herne Hill’s Katie Snowden was the county’s leading runner in that event, finishing 15th (19:58), with Sutton schoolgirl Grace O’Leary 18th (20:02), Helen Wilson 24th (20:13) and Herne Hill’s Hannah Edwards 45th (20:38).

Kingston & Polytechnic’s Molly Renfer was 106th (21:38), with St Mary’s Richmond’s Maddy Garner 109th (21:39).

Epsom & Ewell’s Lucy Drummond, in 12th (11:34) helped Surrey finish fourth in the girls’ U13 3000m championship. Herne Hill’s Georgie Hay was 209th (13:00).

St Mary’s student Ronnie Sparke, who finished fifth in the junior men’s 8,000m (25:30), has been selected to run for Britain in Poland
