Leatherhead’s Katherine Wyld is hoping a fresh pair of eyes will help her claim a Commonwealth Games berth at the British Gas Swimming Championships in Sheffield.
The 24-year-old was visited in the build up to the Steel City showdown by coaches from the British Intensive Training Centre at Loughborough.
Wyld, who claimed silver and bronze last year, struggled to transfer her domestic form to the international arena and returned empty handed from December’s European Short Course Championships.
But after receiving tips on her starts and turns, Wyld has vowed to fly out of the traps in her first major contest of 2010 and not look back until she’s secured a passage to India.
“It was very helpful having the coaches come over from Loughborough to take a look at my training,” said Wyld, who will compete in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle in Sheffield.
“It is good for someone new to take a look at what you are doing and suggest a few things.
“I’m coached really well but I think in anything if it is the same then after a while you just think ‘Well, that’s just the way she does it’ but that doesn’t always mean it’s the right way.
“I’ve been in intensive training for a while now and I’m looking forward to slowing down for the British Championships.
“Hopefully all that work will pay off in Sheffield and I can unleash everything I have been working on.”
Wyld joined forces with Amy Smith, Fran Halsall and Caitlin McClatchey to smash the British 4x100m record en-route to finishing seventh at last year’s World Championships in Rome.
But despite penning her name into the record books, Wyld insists her inclusion in the squad for Delhi is far from rubber stamped.
“I don’t think just because I have been in a squad before that I have any right to assume I’ll be in it this time,” added Wyld.
“Our relay teams will have a great chance of medalling at the Commonwealth Games.
“The 4x200m squad in particular will be very strong and I would love to be part of that team.
“Lots of other girls will go to the trials thinking exactly the same thing so it will be tough.
“All the home nations will be very strong at the Commonwealth Games – England will have a good team but Wales and Scotland will be strong too.
“It will be great to go to Sheffield and have everyone competing together and see where they are all at.
“My thoughts are focussed on getting myself on that team for Delhi and that starts with a good performance this weekend.”
