The traditionally fierce but friendly sporting rivalry between the Whitgift Foundation boy’s schools brought out the best from them in the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
At the end of a wonderful competition, Whitgift School topped the podium with Trinity a worthy second in the year eight Biathlon Championship.
Talented Whitgiftian Henry Choong took the individual title with Harold Pearson of Trinity fifth.
Whitgift’s David Pearson dominated his 1000m run while Trinity’s Harvey Stainthorpe clipped 10 seconds off his previous best with a 3.03 minute run.
The Whitgift team of Choong, Pearson and Dominic O’Hearn trailed Trinity after the run but their excellent swimming brought them to a well earned win by 80 points.
The year seven Whitgift squad of Jonathan Barron, Mitchell Goff and Joshua Miller excelled too, running out a fine second.
All three boys ran track personal bests with Miller third fastest.
Barron posted a first class 32 seconds for his 50m swim.
Year six Whitgiftian Finn Slattery was a creditable 16th of 49 and his long course 32.54 second swim beat the school record.
In the years 11/12 category Alex Fraser ran a 2:52.0 minute personal best and closed in 19th of 33.
