The Hounslow & District Wheelers Road Race is held this Sunday, possibly for the final time.

The 85-mile Peter Young Memorial Road Race sets off from Valley End School at 10.30am.

Organiser Jeff Marshall, who has organised 23 of the 40 races that have been promoted since 1971, has decided to retire and, unless someone else comes forward to organise the event, it could be lost.

This year’s 80-strong field will include Gary Dodd, of Sigma Sport, who won in 2005 and last year, and Tony Gibb, of Cycle Premier-Metaltek CRT, the winner in 2006.

Former Italian pro Flavio Zappi, 48, will also be in action leading a team of young riders under the banner Team Zappi. He wom a King of the Mountains jersey in the Giro d’Italia in the 1980s.

They were led home by Nic Stagg in fourth (17 minutes, 51 seconds), with Rob Gilmour clocking 19.18 and Damian Poulter 20.04.

Overall winner was Tejvan Pettinger, of Sri Chimnoy, in 17.13.

Stagg also finished a crediatable fourth in the SCCU 10 on Saturday.

He clocked 23.39, finishing 90 seconds behind winner Pete Tadros of In-Gear RT.
