Streatham Redskins finished off the season in style with a shock 6-5 victory over Oxford City Stars.

The Redskins travelled to Oxford without Perry Richardson, Russell Stevens and Chris Wittenberg.

Backed by a vociferous band of fans, the Redskins started the game well creating a number of chances to take the lead.

Remy Boprey and Louis Lockwood both were denied by Oxford goalie Tom Devey as the home side failed to pick either player up in front of the net.

Oxford began to get back into the game however Streatham deservedly took the lead when Louis Lockwood’s pass was latched onto by the speedy Liam Rasmussen who then skated through the Oxford defence before firing the puck into the top right hand corner of the net.

Less than a minute later the Redskins doubled their advantage with a superb tic-tac-toe play between Kent Johnson and Gennadi Yufit that was finished by Remy Boprey on the far post.

Oxford were clearly rattled and Paul Gore grappled with Streatham’s Richard Hardy before being thrown to the ice, as tempers flared.

In the final minute of the period Streatham stunned the home crowd again by scoring their third of the night. Liam Rasmussen snatched his second of the night after good work from Peter Molnar.

Oxford started the second period with large amounts of possession but failed to carve out any clear chances. Alan Green and Andy Cox both had chances to score for the Stars but could not find a way past Stefan Nubert in the Redskins goal.

The crowd began to become agitated as the goals failed to freeze on the ice and both goalies kept dislodging them during play causing the referee to stop the game.

With two minutes remaining, former Oxford star Kent Johnson hustled down the left wing before cutting across the slot and firing his shot into the bottom left hand corner to give the visitors a commanding 4-0 lead with only one period remaining.

Before the end of the period Redskins hit penalty trouble and gave Oxford a 5 on 3 power play.

With their first victory over Oxford this season only twenty minutes away, conceding a goal within 30 seconds of the third period starting did nothing for the Redskins fans nerves.

Oxford captain Grant Bailey got the goal assisted by Ken Forshee on the power play.

With the Skins firmly pressed in their own end, Oxford pulled a further goal back after six minutes, again on the power play but this time it was Andrew Shurmer who stole in all alone on the back post to finish another Forshee pass.

With five men finally back on the ice the Redskins hit back and it was Lockwood combining again with Peter Molnar to make the score 5-2.

Three minutes later, Gennadi Yufit scored his first goal of the season with a fantastic effort after good work from Johnson.

At 6-2 up with ten minutes remaining, the Redskins nerves began to show. Forshee scored after a melee in front of the net and then Dean Francis reduced the deficit to two goals.

With 40 seconds left Alan Green pulled it back to within one goal with a real snipers effort to set the game up for a grandstand finish.

From the face-off Oxford pulled their goalie to gain an extra skater as they piled pressure on the ragged Redskins.

With the atmosphere in the rink heating up and the Streatham fans in full voice, Louis Lockwood managed to gain possession but couldn’t hit the empty net.

From the face off Oxford went close again but Nubert came up big in the goal to keep the puck out.

Streatham held on for their first victory over a top six side this season. Remy Boprey was awarded a deserved man of the match and the Streatham team went off to a standing ovation from their fans who have enjoyed a rollercoaster season.

Streatham coach Barry Spours was delighted with the result: “We have played well against some of the top six sides this season and not got the wins we deserved. The guys have skated hard all year against more fancied opposition and I was pleased to see them get a great win on the last game of the season,

“The fans have been great this year and it was good to put on a winning display for them, as they have travelled across the country this year and stuck by us in the tough times”

Streatham now have a number of months to prepare for next season as they missed out on the play-offs.
