Chris Melling reveals he is more than happy to bounce around Harlequins RL’s starting line-up if it means getting to ply his trade week in, week out.

Melling, who was capped at full-back by Great Britain in 2007, has so far operated at wing, stand-off and second row this season.

And the former Wigan Warrior accepts that may be the case for some time to come.

Melling said: “To be honest I am just happy to be out on the field.

“As a professional you just want to play games.

“It is frustrating that I do not have a position of my own but I think it is an advantage both to the team and myself that I am able to play quite a few different roles.

“Obviously with the injuries we have had this season there has been a lot of disruption and I am looking forward to players coming back and things settling down, but for now I will take what is given.”

Melling claimed the opening try as Quins slipped to a narrow 19-12 defeat at Bradford last Friday, leaving them rooted to the foot of the Super League table.

And the 25-year-old reckons the Easter games against Crusaders and Hull KR are the perfect opportunity to get things back on track.

Melling added: “We are getting there slowly and with players coming back the team will get more confidence.

“It is not so much disappointing as it is frustrating at the moment as we know we can play better.

“We have really had the worst of it this year injury-wise and we know we have not had a good start to the season.

“But if we can turn the patches of form we have shown in games into an 80-minute performance we can still do something.

“It is all about staying strong mentally and coming through it.”
