The biggest event in greyhound racing returns to Plough Lane, writes Mark Donald.

The williamhill.com Greyhound Derby held an extra round last night at Wimbledon Stadium to cope with a bumper entry of 207, adding to the usual Friday and Saturday races.

The stadium has recently seen a massive redevelopment, with a shift to a new grandstand boasting modern facilities, a new restaurant and a trackside bar.

General manager Keith Hallinan said: “The team at the track have worked really hard to make sure that this year’s Derby will rank up with the best of them.

“We are expecting an incredible event and atmosphere in the new grandstand.”

The Captain, Wimbledon’s resident tipster, says these are the five to follow this year: Fear Zafonic: second last year and has shown consistent form. 14-1 Westmead Scolari: One of six Westmead dogs entered by legendary trainer Nick Savva. 50-1.

Nambisco: Recent winner of the Scottish Derby and has great early pace to get ahead of the competition by the first bend. 16-1 Mesedo Blue: Irish dog trained by successful Derby trainer Seamus Graham. Should feature in the later stages. 20-1.

Bandicoot Tipoki : Trained by Charlie Lister, this Dog has been progressing steadily and the Derby could be his time to shine. 20-1.
