Daniel Morris was the only Surrey bowler to manage even one victory in the opening week of the National Championships at Beach House Park, Worthing.
In the HSBC National U25 singles, 21-year-old Morris of Cheam beat Yorkshire’s Craig Baker 21-12 in the opening round but he then succumbed 21-14 to the Isle of Wight’s Adam Clark in round two.
The other seven Surrey entries all made first round exits, although Epsom Park’s Michael O’Leary put up a gallant fight before going down 21-17 to Devon’s Zach Kidd in the U25 singles.
The other results featuring Surrey bowlers were (skips in brackets): Friends of English Bowling Fours: Egham (Ian Jenkins) lost 23-13 to Worcestershire (Gareth Roberts), Egham (Barry Martin) lost 20-8 to Devon (Robert Paxton).
Tripes: Egham (Roy Spencer) lost 27-5 to Middlesex (Tony Waller), Woodbridge Hill (Tony Skinner) lost 17-12 to Yorkshire (Nigel Brignall), South London (Lee Dickson) lost 22-12 to Oxfordshire.
National Mixed Fours: Debbie Souter (Southey), Caroline Duarte (Southey), Dave Clark (Weybridge) and Dennis Hennessy (Southey) lost 20-16 to Leicestershire (Andy Irons).
Surrey will be hoping for a dramatic improvement next week when the pairs, singles, over-55 singles, over-55 pairs and mixed pairs all start.
