Twickenham’s double European track champion Mo Farah has pulled out of the England team to compete in next month’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
After an outstanding summer, in which he became the first British athlete to achieve the European 5,000/10,000m double, Farah has decided to call time on his 2010 season.
Instead, he has decided to return to his altitude base in Kenya to prepare for 2011.
Revealing his decision last Friday, Farah said: “I had a great 2010 season and my body is telling me that it is time to take a break from training and racing.
“I have been competing since the start of the year at cross-country, road and track and feel that I need a few weeks off now to let my body recover so that I can start winter training fit and healthy.
“Over the past few weeks I have been getting a few niggles, nothing serious but enough to tell me to ease back. I was looking forward to the Commonwealth Games but, after the success I had this year, I am happy to call it a season.”
Belgrave’s British javelin record holder Goldie Sayers has also withdrawn.
She was advised by UK Athletics medical staff that her hip injury, which occurred at the Aviva UK Championships and European Trials in Birmingham recently, will not be fully healed in time for the Games.
