Three talented young Croydon Harriers displayed their versatility to good effect in the Surrey Combined Events Championships at Broadbridge Heath last weekend.
Shirn Irving won all her discpiplines to win her U15 pentathlon with 2,956 points.
Her performances were: long jump 4.92m, 75m hurdles 11.84 seconds, shot 10.22, jump 1.51m and 800m 2:42.06.
Stirling Gibbons was just beaten into silver in the boys’ event with 1,936 points .
He set personal bests in the long jump (5.02m) and high jump (1.58m).
Joshua Haasz, a year his junior came sixth, including an outstanding 800m win in 2:19.04.
M50 steeplechaser Colin Oxlade showed that there is life in older athletes too, with a spirited run in the 3,000m steeplechase (11:52.3).
Harriers’ endurance squad opened their autumnal programe with a 16th place finish at the Surrey Road Relays at Wimbledon.
Mark Plackett (15:33) and Peter Chambers (15:44) in particular shone in the 6x3mile event, while Alan Burn (17:32), Matthew Kiernan (18:41), Robert Rye (22:56) and Colin Oxlade (18:00) made up the rest of the team.
