Four players from Surrey hockey clubs added to their tally of international caps at Lilleshall National Sports Centre last week in England’s final two full internationals ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010.
Surbiton’s Richard Alexander and James Tindall gained two apiece, while Ben Hawes and Rob Moore - who both left the Long Ditton-based National Premier Division club to join Conference East Wimbledon before the start of this season but have not yet played a league game for them - were also in England’s 22-man squad in Shropshire for the two-test series against France with Moore appearing in both fixtures and Hawes only the second.
In the first game on Friday evening England won 2-1 with Tindall scoring the deciding goal from open play in the 59th minute.
England then won the second game 4-0 on Saturday morning with Moore scoring their third goal from a 63rd-minute penalty corner.
All four leave for New Delhi this Thursday with Alexander, Moore and Tindall in England’s 16-strong nominated Commonwealth Games’ squad, but Hawes only as one of four additional travelling reserves.
Their country plays two training games against both first India and then Australia before the CG XIX hockey tournament proper starts on Monday 4 October, finishing on Thursday 14 October.
It is not yet known whether the squad will be permitted to turn out for their clubs on Sunday 17 October, just two days after their return from India, when Surbiton are away to Cannock and Wimbledon to Harleston Magpies, or how soon thereafter.
However, Hawes, as one of the travelling reserves, returns to England on Sunday 3 October, theoretically able to play for Wimbledon the following Saturday (9 October) at home against St Albans.
