Ricky Boylan is relishing the chance to prove his worth in front of the TV cameras after turning professional.

The 22-year-old from Carshalton will make his professional debut on the undercard to George Groves’ Commonwealth title fight at York Hall, Bethnal Green, on October 30.

Boylan said: “George and I were friends as amateurs. I was speaking to another promoter but George’s date came up first.

“It is my biggest fight yet and I am really looking forward to it.

“I won’t know until two or three weeks beforehand who my opponent will be.”

Boylan, who has a two-year-old son Tommy, gets his big break on a bill being televised by Sky TV after seven years as an amateur.

He began at Rosehill ABC, but two years there proved less fruitful than for current British lightweight champion Lenny Daws and he moved on to Earlsfield.

“I wasn’t really learning at Rosehill,” he said.

“I only had six bouts and lost two of them.

At Earlsfield I was fighting the best boys around the country.

“In five years, I had 83 bouts and won 54.

“I had eight or nine knockouts but I have never been stopped in a fight myself.

“I loved amateur boxing but it didn’t suit me.

“It was all tip-tap and run away.”

Boylan, who weighs in at 62kg is looking forward to a more physical approach as a professional.

“I enjoy a tear up but if they want to box, I will box,” added Boylan.

He delivers an eclectic list of boxers when asked about his heroes although, boasting the nickname Pretty Ricky, it is not surprising that “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather is among them.

“Roy Jones Jr, Tyson, Ricky Hatton, Mayweather...

“Mayweather had the skill, Hatton was aggressive.

“But Jones was my favourite. He was special.”

Boylan hopes success in the ring will allow him to hand over full running of his carpet and window cleaning business in the near future.

“People have tipped me for a British title but I am just concentrating on short term goals though,” he added.

One bout at a time. Anything after a British title is a bonus.”
