At the South of England Relays held at Aldershot over the weekend, SLH’s veteran men proved they are still the best by retaining their title from last year.

David Ogden ran the fastest leg of anyone in the over 50s age group, timing 20.50 minutes for the two lap course covering just under 6km.

Glenn Quarton retained this lead with 21.37 to hand on to Ian Kitching who timed 22.06 and Barry Attwell held first place with his 22.59.

The over 50’s B team were 11th with John Foss timing 22.54; Mike Airey 22.59, Phil Ide 25.30 and Antonio Martins 24.49.

The veteran’s over 60 team of Paul Williams, 23.47; Ken Lee, 26.35; Bob Gevers, 26.25 and Francis Upcott, 27.57 were ninth.

There was no senior men’s team competing for SLH, but Stuart Searle ran individually and timed 22.52.

The women, who ran the day before over 3.85km had one complete team who finished 24th of the 51 competing.

Grace O’Leary led off with a superb 14.01 and handed on to Ruth Myburgh who timed 16.39.

Penny Comins timed 16.08 and Helen Wilson ran well to finish with 15.12.

Veteran Sue MacDonald competed as a lone member without the backing of other team members but timed an excellent 15.33.

A number of South London Harriers participated in the Switchback 5 race organised by Striders of Croydon on Sunday.

Alex Halpin was ninth in 30.00; Andy Davis 14th, 31.00; Bill Arnold 22nd, 33.13; Pippa Major, 32nd (first Female o/45), 35.12; Marketa Martins, 36.46; Richard Oliver, 40.34; Trudy Kuhn, 41.21; Tracey Land, 42.19; Nina Pinkerton, 47.25 and Terry McDonald, 89th in 48.50.

On Saturday, October 2, SLH will be hosting their Annual 5 mile cross country event for the Gibb Cup.

This is one of the oldest races in the athletics calendar, first run in 1888.

This is an open race incorporating the Club’s 5 mile championship.
