Steph Twell’s final race before flying out to the Commonwealth Games saw her post the fastest individual time in the South of England women’s four-stage road relay championships at Aldershot on Saturday.
The St Mary’s Twickenham student clocked 11 minutes, 58 seconds, on the anchor leg for Aldershot, Farnham & District, who retained their team title.
Her time was just 15 seconds outside Paula Radcliffe’s lap record set in 2001.Twell will race the 1,500m and 5,000m for Scotland in Delhi.
Charlotte Purdue, also from St Mary’s, ran Aldershot’s third stage in 12:18, the second fastest time of the day.
She runs the 10,000m for England in India.
First leg runner Mariah McConnaughey (13:30) was the fastest member of the Serpentine team who took the bronze medals behind Aldershot and Arena 80.
First-leg runner Nathalie Warren (14:49) was best for the Walton team who came 28th, Sam Amend (13:46) fastest of the Belgrave quartet in 30th, Charlotte Saunders (14:41) best for Thames Hare & Hounds in 31st and Zoe West (15:17) fastest for 35th-placed Epsom & Ewell Harriers.
First leg runner Anna Garnier (15:45) led Thames Hare & Hounds to the bronze team medals in the veterans women’s relay (1:05:55) behind Winchester (55:51) and Dulwich Runners (59:44).
Bookham teenage international Emelia Gorecka (9:52) anchored Aldershot, Farnham & District to victory in the women’s U17 relay.
Sixth-placed Katie Snowden (10:46) was the fastest member of the Herne Hill trio which finished 24th. Sutton & District came 31st.
Merhawe Temane (9:48) was fastest of Herne Hill’s quartet who came ninth in the boys’ U15 championship (41:37).
Opening leg runner Georgie Hay (12:06) was best of the Herne Hill team which finished 36th in the girls’ U15 championship.
First-leg runner Josh Bartholomew (11:15) was also the fastest of the Sutton & District quartet who came eighth in the boys’ U15 championship, while Paul Burgess (10:58) was best for 16th-placed Herne Hill.
Abbie West (8:40) was fastest for the Herne Hill trio who finished 16th in the girls’ U13 event.
