New Malden’s Tom Onslow-Cole has outlined plans to quit the British Touring Car Championship for life Down Under.
The 23-year-old goes into the final BTCC meeting of the season at Brands Hatch on Sunday in a four-way battle with Jason Plato, Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden for the driver’s championship title.
A title triumph in only his third full-season in the series would further enhance the former Brooklands College student’s growing reputation.
Onslow-Cole says he wants a drive with a manufacturer team next season amid rumours he is ready to walk away from Team Aon.
But the Kingston-born star insists any move must fit in with moves to break into Australia’s V8 Supercars series.
“The plan is to try and secure a deal for next year a lot sooner than it happened for me this time,” he said.
“I really want to get into the Australian V8s next, but that involves building a reputation and doing some testing for a team. Everything is going to have to fit with that.
“there are a lot of whispers going around about next year. I’ve heard I’m supposed to have tested for Chevrolet, but I know nothing about that.
“We’re after a drive with a manufacturer next year, but as far as I know no-one has committed so we will have to wait and see.”
