Gino Rea has finished ninth in the World Supersport Championship after an oil leak ended his podium challenge in the final round at Magny-Cours.

Having qualified in ninthe place, Rea had moved up to fourth place - which would have guaranteed him a final placing of fifth in the championship - until it became clear that oil was leaing onto his tyre.

“I am obviously pretty annoyed but it was good to show we still had the pace to podium,” said Rea.

“My pace was good and I was confident I could finish in a podium position until another rider pointed to the rear of his bike indicating I had a problem with mine.

“On the entrance to the next corner my bike was sliding everywhere and then it was clear I had a problem.

“I pulled over and there was oil leaking onto my tyre so my race was over.”

Rea finished as leading rookie in the series and is back on track this weekend in a Supermoto race at Mettet.
