Boxer Tony Owen is in a confident mood, as he looks to extend his unbeaten record, after beginning his professional career with seven consecutive wins.

The Carshalton-born light-weight is heavily tipped to be a star of the future and fights on October 16 at the K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley.

While the 23-year-old admits that it is good to have an unbeaten record, he stresses that he is taking it one bout at a time. Owen, a bricklayer, is concentrating on working hard to prepare for his next turn in the ring.

“Every fight is the biggest yet. Having an unbeaten record is nice but winning fights brings added pressure. I am just training hard and taking every fight as it comes,” he explained.

“Training is going well. I always keep myself fit but in the last four or five weeks I have stepped it up.

“I am lucky that I am not a person who gets injuries. I had concerns with my wrists in the past but those are long gone now.”

Owen, who expects to weigh in at nine stone, nine pounds on fight night, was a kickboxer from the age of eight and won three world titles.

However, he fancied a new challenge and switched to boxing – something he hopes to have similar success in.

“Obviously the foot and hand movement is very different but kickboxing is a contact sport and it brings the natural fighter out in you. My family were supportive about my move to boxing.

“They are always there at my fights. They are happy if I am happy,” he added.

“I was training so hard that I thought I may as well become professional. I would like to be at the top end of British boxing in the next couple of years. I do not know after that – wherever boxing takes me.”

Tickets for the fight are available from Owen on 0770 3736103.
