Billy Fowles and Ross Cameron share the lead after a fantastic opening day in the latest event on the PGA EuroPro Tour.
In perfect playing conditions at the prestigious Burhill Golf Club in Surrey, 28 players fired scores under par as they began their campaigns bidding for the £10,000 top prize.
The Kerry London PGA EuroPro Tour 2011 is the second tournament of the season and both Fowles (Wentworth, Surrey) and Scotland’s Cameron claimed rounds of 67 (-5).
Fowles made an eagle at the par-five 11th, while Cameron hit a fine vein of form as he made four birdies in five holes between the second and sixth.
Stuart Archibald had been an early clubhouse leader after a round of 68 (-4), which also included an eagle on the 11th.
“Burhill is looking amazing, the greens are running fast and pure,” said Archibald. “It was a nice opening round and hopefully I will be there or thereabouts.”
Archibald was later joined on the same score by another Scottish player, Stephen Gray, who enjoyed a flawless round and became the only player to not drop a shot on the opening day.
Four players, Steve Surry (Cumberwell Park, Wiltshire), Liam Harper (Homelands, Ashford, Kent), Luke Goddard (Hendon, London) and Adam Keogh (Boston West, Lincolnshire) are all tied fifth after rounds of 69 (-3).
Jamie Abbott (Fynn Valley, Suffolk) won the opening event of the season last month at Wensum Valley, Norfolk and is well placed at tied 15th on 71 (-1), although bogeys at the sixth and tenth denied him an overnight place in the top ten.
Robert Steele (Forest of Arden, Warwickshire) won the 2010 PGA EuroPro Tour event at Burhill but looks unlikely to repeat that achievement this year.
He ended on 76 (+4) and in tied 96th place after double bogeys on the fifth and 17th cost him dearly.
A total of 168 players began the tournament and a second round will be held tomorrow before the top 50 and ties will advance to the final round on Friday.
The PGA EuroPro Tour is the leading developmental golf tour in the world and a host of former players have gone on to win major events on the European Tour.
Players who finish the season in the top five in the Order of Merit will advance to the Challenge Tour and be only one step away from playing alongside Europe’s elite.
