Cheam sent Sutton into the Surrey Championship Premier Division’s relegation zone on Saturday, leapfrogging them in the table thanks to a 113-run win, writes Tim Scott.

It is the first time Cheam have been out of the bottom two since the second game, with the league going back to limited overs format this Saturday.

Sutton won the toss and put Cheam in to bat and the visitors made 114-3 by lunch.

David Houpapa made 83 but Sutton’s spinners strangled Cheam’s middle order and they lost three wickets for just five runs to end on 258 all out, Dave Sampson taking 5-37.

Sutton powered out of the blocks in reply, taking 31 from first overs.

Cheam needed inspiration and it came in the form of 17-year-old Surrey Academy wicket keeper Michael Burgess, who took a magnificent one handed diving catch to dismiss Will Muse, prompting a collapse that saw three wickets fall in the space of five balls.

It was a similar story after tea, as Sutton struggled to hold on to their wickets and were eventually all out for 145.

Cheam host bottom of the table Ashtead this Saturday, while Sutton visit Reigate Priory.
