Herne Hill Harriers edged nearer promotion in the Southern Men’s League after producing their best performance of the season to win the penultimate league match at Parliament Hill on Sunday, writes Sarwah Khan.

In a neck and neck battle with previously unbeaten division leaders Kent AC, Harriers prevailed by just 2.5 points after winning both strings in the final event of the afternoon, the discus, courtesy of Ashley Ralph and Garry Power, who had also earlier scored a double first in the hammer.

There were also wins for Allandre Johnson and Didier Sorel in the two javelin events, Ben Paviour in the A-string 5000m race with his fastest time for six years, Tim Elsey the B-string 5000m and Eugene Osei-Amevenu in both B-string 100m and 200m races on his league debut.

A win in the final match at Crawley on August 13 would move them to third in Division Two South and give them an outside chance of promotion.

At the UK Championships in Birmingham, Denise Osei got through to the semi final of the women’s 100m where she ran 11.91 seconds.

Peter Phillips ran a near PB of 47.88 in a 400m heat, Robert Graham clocked 10.89 in a 100m heat and Paul Oluyemi recorded one valid jump of 6.63m in the long jump.

Matthew Walcott ran 14.89 to reach the B final of the 110m hurdles, with Thomas Ashby’s last minute decision to also compete clocked 15.13.

Adelle Tracey ran 2:06.87 in the semi-final of the 800m but did not make the final.
