Gareth Gardner and Joe McDonald both enjoyed impressive victories in the final Queensbury Boxing League meeting of the year on Saturday.

New Addington’s Gardner cemented his position as the number one super middleweight in the league by beating Luke Dawson by a unanimous points decision at the Effingham Park Hotel in West Sussex to claim the vacant belt.

McDonald made it a hat-trick of victories in the middleweight division by beating the Michael Woolsey, also on a points decision.

Gardner's victory against Dawson was perhaps the most impressive, given he was giving away the advantage in both reach and height.

The 27-year-old produced a near punch perfect performance to shut out his fellow challenger - unloading a barrage of stinging punches time and again into his opponent's ribcage making sure there was no doubt who the victor would be when the final bell of the contest rang.

“It was a tough fight," he said afterwards.

"He caught me with some hurtful body shots in there that really stopped me in my tracks, but I was determined not to let anyone of my friends and family down that had come to support me and it all came good on the night.

“I’m going to enjoy a few days off now and then I will get straight back into training and hopefully I will be back in the ring in February or March. ”

McDonald's victory was his best to date as he beat the previously unbeaten Woolsey to confirm his arrival as one of the division's most exciting prospects.

From the opening bell, McDonald found little trouble in finding the target of the advancing Woolsey as he peppered the face of his opponent with spiteful looking jabs that continued throughout and again it was clear who would be walking away with victory at the end.

And the 28-year-old insists he is is ready and waiting to face whoever the Queensbury Boxing League put in front of him next year.

“It all went to plan in there and I stuck to my game plan and it all paid off," he said.

"We had studied Michael's last performance and knew he was open to the straight shots so that’s exactly what I went out to do and it worked perfectly.

"I felt really comfortable in there and although he did hit me with some powerful shots to the body, I was never in any trouble.

"Now I’m just looking forward to finding out who I will be facing for the title and then I will be back in the gym preparing to bring home the belt."
