Striker Chris Morrison completed a whirlwind week by coming off the bench to fire Banstead Athletic into the second round of the FA Vase on Saturday.

The former Walton Casuals frontman left Franklyn Road on Tuesday, trained at Merland Rise on Thursday, and signed for his new club on Friday before bagging a brace in Saturday's 3-0 home win over Wealdon.

And boss Graeme Banyard was delighted the gamble to name him in the squad paid off to set up a home tie against Combined Counties Premier League rivals Colliers Wood United - to the annoyance of his players, who had been hoping for a weekend away.

"Chris has all the attributes I look for in a striker. He is big, strong, has a good touch and is quick. I'm very pleased to have him," he said.

"It was 0-0 before he came on and he scored two and set up the other which speaks for itself really. It gives me a few problems in terms of selection up front, but that is something I'd rather have than not at the moment.

"The home draw is the best we could hope for but the boys were looking forward to getting an away trip somewhere nice."

Morrison's star turn came almost immediately after his introduction on 55 minutes when he beat three men to cross for Marcus Campbell to poke home.

Fellow striker Paul Hunt set up Morrison for his first before he grabbed his second to wrap up the scoring, powering a header home from Taylor Mollatt's pin-point cross with 14 minutes remaining.

Just 55 fans witnessed the action and Banyard hopes a run in the Vase can generate more support home and away with important league games against second-placed Merstham, Egham Town and Sandhurst Town to come.

"All we can do is keep winning games and hopefully we will start attracting more people - a good run in the cup can only help," he added.

Banstead travel to Merstham on Saturday, with Banyard looking to add strength in depth to his squad by bringing in another new face ahead of the crunch game.
