The 2006 BUPA Great North Run was a poignant occasion for Keith Felton and Breda Leyne.
Keith's wife Sally was due to run in the event, but died suddenly on September 1.
Breda, her friend from Epsom Allsorts running club, took her place, competing on behalf of the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
Thanks to Breda's run, the charity have now benefited by more than £6,000 in memory of Sally.
The money was raised through sponsorship of Breda by friends and family of Keith and Sally and from the efforts of the Epsom Allsorts and Epsom Oddballs.
Keith's employers at Fleming Family & Partners matched the £2,500 raised on the fundraising website and other donations have been paid to Keith and Breda.
Epsom Allsorts have also pledged to make Breakthrough Breast Cancer their chosen charity for 2006/07.
Sally's name will now be placed on a commerative wall at the Breakthrough Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre in Kensington.
