Barnes shaded the possession and enjoyed better ball control to claim a deserved 21-15 win at Richmond on Saturday.

The visitors raced into a 14-0 lead thanks to two converted tries in the first 15 minutes.

First, scrum-half Jonathan Green took a quick tap penalty and scurried through, drawing the last defender before giving hooker Tom Berry a scoring pass. Paul Farmer converted from wide out.

Then a line-out led to the ball being moved down the line for Jennings to score, with Farmer again converting well.

With top try scorer Francois van Schalwyk having to hobble off and be replaced by Jono Farmer, Richmond were up against it, particulary when Tim Cook missed a penalty in front of the posts.

But they did reduce the arrears when Richmond's forwards harried well from Tom Drewe's intelligent kick and James Grimes ran 10m to score. Cook missed the conversion.

Barnes then scored a vital third try when Barnes again secured line-out ball and drove Richmond back for a try by prop Timothy McKeller. Farmer added two more points from the touchline.

With the benefit of the wind in the second half, Richmond planned to pinned Barnes into their own 22.

But injuries and a heavy penalty count prevented the match from slowing although Richmond did score their second try when James Whitfield emerged with the ball from a drive to the line despite losing his shorts.

With 10 minutes left, a mighty shove from the pack saw Tristan Wesley score Richmond's third try.

But hindered by a further injury to Rupert Allhusen, Barnes held out for their first derby success over Richmond at the ninth attempt.

Richmond now turn their attention to cup action next Sunday and the chance to regain confidence against National Three side Southend at the Athletic Ground (3pm).
