Merton's topsy-turvy start to the hockey league season continued with a 4-2 defeat at Bank of England last weekend.
In a fairly evenly contested game, Merton's defence proved far too inconsistent in its tackling to deserve a better outcome. Goals from Sutherland and Gillespie failed to secure the necessary points.
Merton Ladies had no league fixtures this week but the 1st XI secured a pleasing 2-2 draw against Cheam in a friendly.
Other results, in the Surrey Open League, for the men's section were: 2nd XI beat Old Kingstonians 2nd XI 2-0; 3rd XI lost 0-3 to Sanderstead 2nd XI and 4th XI beat Bank of England 3rd XI 8-0.
Merton's colts hockey scheme is now taking off with 9-11 year olds being catered for on Fridays, 4-5.15 pm, starting 3rd November; and on Sunday mornings, from 12th November, for 10-12 year olds, 9.30-10.45 pm; 13-16 year olds, 10.45-12 noon. Anyone interested can book with Merton's Community Coach for Hockey, Clive Rockell, on: 07761 615172 or access: www.mertonhockey.com or just come along. All equipment provided - £3 per session.
