Rosslyn Park bagged the four-try bonus they needed in a 24-7 win over Cinderford to retain third place in National League One, and to keep up the pressure on the two clubs above them – Ealing Trailfinders and Coventry.
Only a combination of their own errors in the ‘red zone’ and some excellent defending by their visitors prevented that score from being considerably more.
Head coach Alex Codling was broadly pleased, but not uncritical.
He said: “The performance on Saturday was a very similar one to recent home games.
“Great intent and ambition in the first 40 minutes but not finishing off the opposition and then not kicking on in the second half.
“Having said that we played some outstanding stuff at times and our physicality was excellent which we knew it would need to be”.
This weekend Park’s crucial local ferby at Richmond has been moved to Friday night to avoid a clash with England v Italy at Twickenham on the Saturday afternoon.
While Park will start as favourites to repeat last season’s win at the Athletic Ground, the form book is a poor guide to these full-blooded local derbies.
Last Saturday only a last minute penalty preventes Richmond from gaining a surprise win over Blackheath at the Rectory Field.
Codling said: “The boys are looking forward to the local derby against Richmond on Friday.
“Night games always have a different feel and this coupled with it being a derby means it should be a cracker of a game.”
Park expect to have more-or-less a full squad to pick from with the possible exception of flanker Harry Broadbent who has picked up a niggling leg injury.
