They may be top of London Division One South, but Sutton & Epsom have only just managed to click, says head coach Lee Cholewa.
Saturday’s 46-10 demolition of Charlton Park keeps Sutton clear of the chasing pack by four points ahead of this weekend’s visit to Rugby Lane of third-placed Medway.
It came on the back of a 20-3 win over struggling Dover then weekend before with a performance that left Cholewa wanting much more.
And he got it in east London when an Aaron Phillips hat-trick, and tries from Joe Ridgley, Matt Whitaker (two) and Steve Munford put Charlton to the sword – Sam Hurley and Jacob Atkins shared the extras.
Cholewa said: “We played some of our best rugby of the season in that first half.
“We were playing in difficult conditions, but we controlled the game, made good decisions, played in right areas and all we’ve trained towards paid off.
“It all clicked into place, because against Dover we did not click.”
He added: “Medway are a very strong team, and every coach I have spoken to have said Medway are a very good side with an aggressive set of forwards, and with very good backs who like to play.
“We’ll need to make sure we click again, otherwise it will be a tough afternoon.
“My message to the boys is that this weekend is a huge one. They will be coming to Sutton looking to win – they will not be just wanting one or two points.”
Sutton are unbeaten in nine games, but they still are only four points clear.
Cholewa said: “Four points is one game – if we lose this weekend and other teams win, we could be overtaken.
“But the league will look after itself, we have to worry about ourselves, and if we perform, nobody should be able to beat us.”
Cholewa is without hooker James Bennett and prop Tarik Al Khaldi for this weekend’s action.
