James Caddy admits taking Sutton & Epsom into the National League Three would be a proud moment, but the skipper is not planning the party just yet.
Saturday’s comprehensive 61-14 victory over Charlton Park allowed Sutton to consolidate their position at the top of the London Division One South table.
The Black & Whites remain 10 points ahead of Guildford with just three games remaining – and a win at Medway this weekend could see them crowded champions.
Captain James Caddy said: “It would be an incredibly proud moment for me if we do manage to go up.
“We’ve had the same group of guys in the team for a while and we’ve gelled well - it is a very exciting time for everyone.
“There’s a great buzz around the squad. We love playing with each other.”
But with this week’s opponents Medway mounting an end-of-season charge by winning four straight games, Caddy is refusing to get ahead of himself.
“We came third last season and it was no secret that we wanted to get promoted this year,” he said.
“We are close but we cannot sit back. It would be great to get over the line as soon as possible - no-one wants it to go down to the wire.”
Sutton put in a superb first-half display against Charlton Park, claiming a bonus point within 26 minutes.
Caddy was pleased with his side’s effort but felt they could have recorded an even more devastating win in the second-half.
“We started strongly and that’s something we set out to do,” he said. “We did not want Charlton to ease into the game.
“We scored some really good tries and to get a big lead at half-time was very pleasing.
“It was actually a little disappointing not to replicate that after the break.
“Perhaps our discipline wasn’t quite there and we let them score a couple of tries. But all in all it was a great result.”
The triumph over struggling Park was the consecutive match in which Sutton have reached the 60-point mark, having thrashed Dover 63-0 the previous week.
Caddy insisted Sutton’s expectations had changed over the season as a result of their dominance.
He added: “You’ve got to put each game into context. Charlton are not in a great run so while the result was emphatic, I felt the Dover performance was better in terms of importance and quality.
“We wanted to beat them [Charlton Park] to nil, which shows how far we have come and the ambition in the side.”
