Chipstead cast aside their disappointing league loss the previous week and took a convincing 40-12 victory at Old Walcountians in the Incentive FM Surrey Bowl tie against their local rivals on Saturday, writes Nigel Robinson.
Chipstead took the lead two minutes into the game when Ross Cannon broke from the half-way line and dodged through the tackles to score under posts. Simon Martin added the two points. Chipstead piled on the pressure and were unlucky not to go further up with a spilt ball just before the goal line and a missed penalty after 15 minutes.
With half an hour on the clock, Chipstead were dominating the game and an attacking move sent the ball swiftly along the backs and then back inside to John Holah in support who powered over under the posts. Four minutes later and more quick ball along the backs saw Captain, Paul MacDonald, come up from fullback, chip over the heads of the defence and outpace them to ground the ball.
Walcountians were caught out with another chip over in the 39th minute when Ross Cannon saw the opportunity, and again, the defence were outpaced by Cannon who took advantage of the deep in-goal area and grounded the ball just before the dead ball line. With Simon Martin converting all four tries the teams turned round with Chipstead at a comfortable 0-28.
Walcountians started the second half strongly and tested Chipstead's defence for 15 minutes and were rewarded with a try when a loose clearance kick went to their powerful centre who didn't miss the opportunity.
Chipstead rallied and their first meaningful attack of the half quashed the defence and put John Holah over at full reach for his second try.
The best was saved to the re-start from this try, when Macca gathered the ball on the half-way line and sprinted to the line with Wes in support. A superb side step around the full back put Macca in the clear to the line and another seven points.
Walcountians scored a well deserved consolation try with two minutes to go for a final score of 12-40 Man of the Match: John Holah Chipstead play Old Blues in the League at The Meads on Saturday.
