Sunday was a superb day for the U11s of Wimbledon Minis Rugby Club at the prestigious Sutton & Epsom U11 Festival.

Eight top sides from Surrey, Middlesex and Sussex played some outstanding rugby, providing huge entertainment for the large contingency of supporters, and Wimbledon came out on top with what is perhaps the best result for any Wimbledon Minis side.

Three pool matches pitched Wimbledon first against Horsham, the Sussex county champions, then Sutton and Epsom, the Surrey Champions, followed by a tie against Old Reedonians.

All three matches were won by Wimbledon with a combination of excellent defence, with Alex Kane at the forefront, and attacking pace from the backs, with Houghton and Bracegirdle each grabbing a brace of tries The semi-final was an epic affair with Warlingham taking an early lead and dominating the first half but Wimbledon stuck to their task.

Their forwards took charge in the second half creating first an equalizing try and then a match-winning "golden try" in extra time The final was played against a strong Teddington side but Wimbledon set the tone from the outset with their locks Morris and Oosterwyck making powerful runs into the Teddington back-line early on, creating a two-try lead by half time.

Teddington came back very hard with a score in the opening moments of the second-half but Wimbledon rallied and played sensible, percentage rugby to close the match out 14-7 in a tension-filled and exhausting finale.

With the end of the season fast approaching this win bodes well for Wimbledon's chances at the Surrey A Championships in April
