Richmond director of rugby Brett Taylor admitted title glory is within his side's grasp after a hard-fought victory over fellow promotion hopefuls Shelford last weekend.

The 28-11 triumph, coupled with second-placed Worthing's shock defeat at Hertford, stretched unbeaten Richmond's lead at the top of London League One to six points with five games to play.

And Taylor revealed there was a buoyant mood in the dressing room after the game.

He said: "Everybody came off delighted and, then when we heard Worthing had lost, the players were gobsmacked.

"If anything, it has concentrated everybody's minds as we are now convinced we could have it sewn up before we play away to Worthing.

"It would be a great day if we could get the wins in the bag and really go down there and enjoy our day on the south coast."

Saturday's win came courtesy of tries from Neil Piggot, James Bucknall, Owen Gregory and Matt Hunt, as Taylor's men ended Shelford's 10-game unbeaten run.

And the Richmond boss was delighted by his team's display.

He added: "It was a huge win.

"Shelford are a very, very strong side and, to be honest, it was one of our best performances of the season.

"We matched them physi-cally and kept chipping away until we got our reward."

Richmond take a break from the league program this weekend when they face Effingham & Leatherhead in the quarter-finals of the Surrey Cup.

And Taylor insisted that while it was not the main priority for the season, he still viewed the cup as important.

He added: "We will go there with as strong a side as we can.

"We want to produce sides that can win every week.

"This hopefully will be our last year in the Surrey Cup and we want to mark that by winning it."
