Streatham-Croydon Rugby Club are on the look-out for a new coach after sacking Doug Murray, writes Owen Jones.

Despite a season that saw the club reach the final of the Surrey Bowl and the fifth round of the Junior Vase. they could only manage sixth in Surrey League Three.

Murray appears to be heading north of the border to join Edinburgh-based Lismore RFC of Scottish National League Three and is likely to be taking Young Player of the Year Matt Murray, his son, with him.

In a statement, club President Dick Towers said: “We would like to thank Doug for all the hard work that he has put in to Streatham and Croydon rugby, not just from a coaching perspective but also with his contribution to the maintenance of the grounds and in recruitment. We wish him every success for the future.”

Towers added that now was the time for the club to pull together and push for promotion in the coming season.

“The support we received in our run to the Surrey Bowl final shows how much this club means to the players and supporters of the club," he said.

"If we can continue with that form going into next season I cannot see why we cannot do well but it is going to take a lot of hard work and commitment to reproduce that level of intensity.”

Streatham-Croydon run three senior sides and a junior section covering ages 7-13.

Accommodation facilities are available to the new coach and pre-season training is due to commence on the Thursday, July 9.
