Sutton & Epsom have named 20-year-old scrum-half Steve Munford as captain.
He replaces Graham Hill as skipper having stood in for the prop on a couple of occasions last season.
Munford is already making a mark, having insisted that players turn up for fitness sessions ahead off this week’s official start of pre-season training.
The former Epsom College student said: “Last season we played some good rugby but failed to take our chances in the league, we also lost concentration on a couple of occasions and gave away good leads. I am determined that we will not do that this season and we will be fitter.”
Munford, who has been with Sutton since the age of 13, will work with new coach Terry O’Connor, who led London Scottish out of the national leagues before helping out at Chobham last season as they reached the Surrey Cup final.
O’Connor, who spent three years coaching with Dick Best at Harlequins before overseeing coaching at Rosslyn Park, is hoping Sutton can make a big impact in the newly formed National League Three London & South-East.
“It is great to work with these more community based sides especially when the spirit of the club overcomes its lack of resources to create success above the teams expected ability.
“Sutton is a well organised club with great spirit and I intend that they should perform above expectations.”
Training is held at Rugby Lane, Cheam, each Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm. Sutton run five senior sides and can offer rugby to players of all abilities they are recruiting now.
