Warlingham Rugby Club’s U15s were treated to a training day at the weekend with two of England's World Cup winning stars.
Steve Thompson and Ben Cohen pulled on Warlingham’s traditional sky blue and white hooped shirts at the session for the youngsters, who next season graduate to the Warlingham Academy.
More than 30 players turned out and there was also a prize presentation for the team’s achievements last season.
The Warlingham youngsters worked very closely with the England stars, receiving individual feedback as well as superb team guidance.
Hooker Thompson and wing Cohen, who both played in England’s 2003 World Cup final victory, ran through moves and offered invaluable advice which will be taken on to the pitch next season.
“My early days playing rugby were among my happiest,” said Thompson.
“So I really enjoy visiting clubs like Warlingham and working with enthusiastic youngsters.”
Among the award-winners presented by Cohen and Thompson on the day was Josh Rawson (newcomer of the year), Sam Coleman (forward of the year), Scott McGarry (back of the year), Liam Long (the players’ player of the year), and player of the year, George Farrell.
Senior training at Warlingham’s Hamsey Green ground has already begun, every Tuesday and Thursday night for players 16 and over.
The club’s junior and mini open weekends, for boys from 6 to 18 and girls from 6 to 12, novices and experienced players alike, will be staged from 10am on Sunday September 6 and September 13.
