Old Caterhamians started their season with a 54-24 victory over Old Isleworthians in the first round of the National Junior Vase at Park Avenue on Saturday.

It took Cats just four minutes to open the scoring through Alex Rinngale, with Jess Barnes adding the conversion.

Two minutes later, Alex Rayment broke through the visitors’ defence to score in the corner.

Isleworthians hit back with a converted try after 20 minutes, but Cats replied just before half-time when Dave Cricuolo burst up the right and outpaced the defence to touch down by the posts. Barnes’ conversion made it 19-10 at half-time.

A Barnes penalty five minutes after the restart was quickly followed by tries for Wade Turney and Tom Skinner. Barnes converted both and added a penalty to put Cats 29 points clear.

Two further unconverted tries from Jess Barnes and Tom Skinner widened the score gap but Isleworthians then ran in two converted tries of them own.

The final try came for Cats when hooker Craig Knight scored under the posts.
