Old Walcountians overwhelmed an under-strength Old Paulines XV 70-0 in a friendly at Clock House on Saturday.

It wasn’t much of a contest, but gives newly-promoted Walcountians a boost upon their return to Surrey One after a seven-year absence when they host Croydon at Clock House (3pm).

Despite missing six first team regulars, Walcountians’ powerful pack put a reserve-strength visiting side on the back foot from the start.

Props Kemlo Longstaff and Ben Anderson were impressive as the visiting pack was shunted off the ball from the kick-off although it took more than 20 minutes for Walcountians to find an attacking rhythm.

They finall took the lead when number eight Warren Chapman broke from the base of a scrum and the supporting Chris Mockford provided a perfectly-weighted pass for centre Sam Naylor to burst through a gap and score.

From then on, the visitors were unable to put up much resistance.

Scrum-half Wally Fourie caught out Paulines’ defence with a blindside break from a ruck to score Walcountians second try and, shortly afterwards, Naylor shook off two attempted tackles to score again.

There were further tries came before the break. Callum Stone beat the defence to the ball from his own kick forward. Next, Scott Cook touched down following a surge for the line from replacement winger Ryan McGibbon.

Finally, Chapman broke from the base of the scrum to leave Paulines’ defence grasping at thin air.

Five minutes after the restart, Naylor brushed off three attempted tackles to complete his hat-trick.

Schoolboy winger Fred South got the next two tries. First, he got onto the end of a long pass from second row Tom McDowell. For his second, six minutes later, South was on the scoresheet again and accelerated out of reach of the defence.

Ollie Beales opened his try-scoring account for the season when he completed a three-quarter move by outpacing the defence.

In the final minute, a breakout from their own half finished with flanker Jack South going over for a try. And there was still time for replacement flanker Matt Pridding to drive over the line after Alex Sutherland’s break had been checked just short.

Ollie Beales added five conversions.
